NEW ELEVATOR CODE ALERT Two-Way Elevator Video Monitoring

Preview

Elevate Monitoring and Georgia Lift Solutions are partnering for expert elevator monitoring services.

New Elevator Code - There is a change in elevator emergency code, that is being adopted across the country for all new elevators being installed and modernizations. The code is calling for two-way elevator video monitoring and is referring to a security and communication system installed in an elevator cab that allows real-time video and audio communication between the elevator and a remote monitoring location. This is especially critical for emergency situations, such as when someone is trapped in an elevator and cannot use a standard phone or intercom system (e.g., due to a disability). To accomplish code compliance Georgia Lift Solutions is partnering with Elevator Monitoring a company dedicated to elevator communications and safety.

Their system incorporates a video camera and a 2 way text response system for the hearing impaired that is fully compliant with all applicable codes. It also allows them to have better visibility into the elevator to see if there is an emergency that cannot be audibly communicated through the phone line. Here is the applicable code:

  • Key Section:

    • ASME A17.1-2019 / 2016 (and newer)

      • Section 2.27.1.1.3: Requires that elevators have a means of two-way communication that:

        • Is accessible to hearing- and speech-impaired individuals.

        • Allows for video and voice communication.

        • Allows monitoring personnel to see passengers and communicate with them without the use of a handset.

    Highlights:

    • The communication system must be visual and audible.

    • A video component is required if there's no other way for the operator to determine that assistance is needed (e.g., if the person is deaf or mute).

    • Must be operational during power outages (backed by battery).

In the chart to the left you can see a summary of the new code and how it effects new elevators and modernizations.

In addition to this new elevator code requirement, two-way elevator video monitoring is becoming increasingly popular. This type of system gives the elevator rider and building owner or property manager peace of mind. Building occupants can rest assured knowing that in the event of an emergency communication will not be interrupted getting them the help they need.

Georgia Lift Solution continues to offer expert elevator repair, service and maintenance. They are looking forward to a great relationship with ELEVATE Monitoring as they provide security and safety with expert monitoring and elevator security systems.
